The Secret to Staying Consistent? Become the Teacher.

Mar 09, 2026

What if the secret to staying consistent with movement isn’t finding the perfect workout… but becoming the person who leads it?

I used to joke that I get paid to work out. But over the years, I’ve realized it isn’t really a joke. It might be the most powerful fitness strategy I’ve ever discovered.

Consistency in movement is hard.

For years I stayed active because the structure was built in. I was dancing regularly, surrounded by community, rehearsal schedules, and classes that required me to show up. Movement was simply part of the rhythm of my life.

When I stepped away from dance, that rhythm softened into a choice. My yoga practice became sporadic depending on my local offerings and my budget. My membership was often an easy expense to scale back to save on money. I found a Zumba class at a less expensive gym that I loved, but the timing wrecked my sleep. I tried different things, but nothing quite recreated the natural consistency that had once been there.

Maybe you’ve felt something similar.
You love movement, but sustaining a steady practice in the middle of a full life is another story.

When the Structure Disappears

The turning point for me didn’t come from finding the perfect class or the perfect schedule - it came from stepping up to lead one.

One afternoon a teacher didn’t show up at our community center yoga class. My friend looked at me and said, “Are we leaving, or are you going to teach this class?”

So I stood up and taught it.

I was nervous, of course. But something clicked almost immediately.

The Power of Showing Up for Others

What I discovered that day is something most people don’t talk about: when you are the teacher, you show up. You show up not only for yourself, but for the people in the room who are counting on you. Your body moves because you’re demonstrating. Your practice deepens because you’re constantly studying, refining, and learning how to guide others through movement.

Teaching creates a kind of accountability that is incredibly powerful.

Over the past 15 years I’ve built and rebuilt my teaching life many times. Our family relocated frequently with the Air Force, which meant starting over in new cities, new studios, and new communities every few years.

I’ve created classes in fitness centers, worked within studios, built my own spaces, and established my own online presence more than once.

And I can say this with complete honesty: the years I wasn’t teaching consistently were the hardest for my health and my mental wellbeing.

The years I was teaching were transformative. When I am planning classes and experiences for my community, I am moving my body more. I am meeting other instructors, taking their classes as a participant and prioritizing my own movement. The consistency becomes intrinsic to the practice of teaching.

Why We Created Mindful Movement Academy

Teaching movement isn’t only something you give to others. In many ways, it becomes one of the most reliable ways to stay connected to your own body, your own practice, and your own sense of purpose.

That realization is a big part of why we created Mindful Movement Academy.

This training was designed for people who feel that quiet pull to share movement with others. Some come with years of experience already behind them. Others arrive at their own “get up or go home” moment, wondering if they might be capable of leading.

You don’t need to have everything figured out.

Very few teachers begin that way.

What helps is having a thoughtful framework, experienced mentorship, and a supportive community around you as you grow into the role.

Teaching movement is not just about leading a class. It is about cultivating a practice that continues to support your own wellbeing while creating meaningful impact in the lives of others.

If something in this resonates with you, if you’ve felt the quiet curiosity about what it might be like to guide others through movement, consider this your invitation.

I'm so happy you're here,
